Mosob Eritrea restaurant

24/02/2013 21:41

There is something about the breaking of bread, and sharing a meal that you eat with your hands that brings a feeling of community that has been repeated throughout the ages.
I must admit that I had no idea of the food of Eritrea. To be honest I have not had much to do with any of the food of Africa, and if the food of Mosob is anything to go by, much to my detriment.  The whole experience is quite a revelation to me. Some of the dishes are similar in appearance and texture to curry but the spicing quite different.  It works a lot more on subtlety with its flavours.
When I go to a restaurant with which I have not to much knowledge instead of picking blindly my first choice is to get whatever the person serving would choose. That way it can only be good. The serving staff have a great knowledge of the food and also the areas it comes from.
I was told to go with the set meals, and as there was 5 of us for dinner, some veggie and others meat eaters, two sets was ample.
I hate the word journey. It is so over used, everyone is having one these days. But from the starters all the way through to dessert it showed all the influences of Persia on to the middle east and finishing with its former colonial partner Italy. It's hard to describe the style, but it is served on a type of pancake that has a porus side to soak up juices. Starters were wraps of these pancakes with hummus and some of the best lamb samosas I have ever had. The dips are great too.
On to main and we have 4 or 5 pancakes on a large serving platter with the different dishes on top. Now you eat this with your hands using the pancakes as an eating utensils. And I think that this adds to the dishes.
The desserts were a Tartufo, which is an ice cream ball wrapped in a coating. We had a lemonchello and a chocolate one. Each a masterpiece.
This is a great place to meet with friends, catch up and enjoy good food. I can't rate highly enough this restaurant.  Www.mosob.co.uk.
